    What’s New?

An update of goings-on that reflect the continuing verve and vitality of the Strip District and Lawrenceville

Annual Lawrenceville Joy of Cookies Tour

    The Joy of Cookies

The Joy of Cookies Cookie Tour had its beginnings as a holiday open house at Jay Design Soaps & Gifts in 1997. Driven by the spirit of collaboration, it has become a signature Lawrenceville event in its thriving business district. This year’s tour will be held on December 1, 2, and 3.

This is a free and family-friendly event. The self-guided tour allows you and your friends and family to stroll through the neighborhood, checking out each shop and sampling cookies at your own pace. Just grab a map and go! Each shop has its own hours. While the tour is generally 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, be sure to check the map for each stop’s location and hours. Get around by hopping on and off one of two Molly’s Trolleys from noon to 6:00 p.m.—generously provided by Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

On Saturday, December 2 only, it’s Light Up Lawrenceville and the Cookie Mall! Stop in the Cookie Mall from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 4600 Butler Street, for homemade cookies from local nonprofits, music, carols, and pictures with Santa (4:00 to 6:00 p.m.). Then join Lawrenceville United for the annual tree lighting at 7:00 p.m. in the Allegheny Cemetery Driveway on Butler Street to launch the holiday season.

Café Cimino Named a Best Inn of the South

    Southern Living

Southern Living magazine, a national publication, has named Café Cimino Country Inn (in Sutton, WV) one of the 20 best inns of the South. Co-owner Melody Urbanic happily notes, “It’s been great for overnight stays!”

Indeed, if you are looking for a weekend trip with friends or a romantic getaway with someone special, chef/owner Tim Urbanic delivers Southern Italian flavors with a “mountain” flair: robust cheeses, the family red sauce, ravioli with mountain ramps, and lots of ricotta. Urbanic also serves steak and seafood, as well as fresh pies from an outdoor oven. Nearby Sutton Lake is ideal for boating and fishing.

As a bonus, the inn will happily pack you a lunch—a fat, overflowing Italian sandwich. Rates, from $160, include a three-course gourmet breakfast.

A Celebration of Handcrafted, Functional Ceramic Artworks

The current fifth annual CRAFTED exhibit at Contemporary Craft invites visitors to reexamine vessels for drinking. CRAFTED is a special showcase and sale that features functional ceramic artworks handcrafted by more than 30 specially selected, talented ceramic artists from the U.S. and abroad. Guests are encouraged to rethink and rediscover the ritual of dining and drinking by incorporating functional artworks in life, starting with handmade objects that are used every day, such as mugs, cups, and tumblers. CRAFTED is on view and will run until January 30, 2018.

The artists also have the option to continue to exhibit their work with Contemporary Craft until the NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) conference, which will be held in Pittsburgh in March 2018.
