    Hieber’s Pharmacy Opening

Dr. Rosemary Mihalko Returns Full-Service Compounding Pharmacy to Its Strip District Roots

    Hieber's Pharmacy

McCaffery has announced that Oakland-based Hieber’s Pharmacy will expand its brand to open a second location at The Terminal in the Strip District. Born in the Strip in the 1860s, Hieber’s Pharmacy at The Terminal will span 4,535 square feet and provide a blend of the old and the new through personable service with a small local staff, an old-fashioned soda fountain, state-of-the-art labs for sterile and non-sterile compounding, locally sourced goods, and the latest in pharmaceutical technology. In addition to prescription medications, over-the-counter products, compounded medications for humans and pets, vaccines and COVID testing, Hieber’s will also provide local delivery and online shopping options. The opening of Hieber’s Pharmacy at The Terminal is anticipated for summer 2022.
“As the Strip District has grown with residents and daytime office traffic, the services Hieber’s Pharmacy will provide are vital to the long-term viability of the neighborhood,” says McCaffery Pittsburgh vice president Dean Welch. “And to bring Hieber’s back to its founding neighborhood is a perfectly fitting story for The Terminal, and one in which we are proud to take part.”

Since 2019, Hieber’s Pharmacy has been owned and operated by Pittsburgh native Dr. Rosemary Mihalko—the pharmacy’s fourth, and first female, owner. “I am thrilled to bring Hieber’s Pharmacy back to the Strip District,” states Dr. Mihalko. “With our rich, 100-plus-year history in Pittsburgh, I look forward to delivering our superior services to a new part of the city.”

Specializing in custom compounding for more than 100 years, Hieber’s Pharmacy was established in Pittsburgh’s Strip District neighborhood 16 decades ago by the Hieber brothers. The pharmacy moved several times through the city until it was purchased by Frank Stanish in 1945, when he brought the pharmacy to its current location in Oakland and later partnered with Ed (Sonny) Kilkeary. In 2000, the pharmacy was purchased by Joe Bettinger, who served at the helm until 2019, when the facility was purchased by Dr. Mihalko. As one of the first pharmacies in Pittsburgh to dispense the polio vaccine in the 1950s, the Hieber’s pharmacists worked directly with vaccine developer Dr. Jonas Salk to distribute the vaccine to local schools. Specializing in pharmaceutical compounding, Hieber’s customizes unique dosage forms of medications based on customer needs and preferences, including dye-, preservative-, alcohol-, and sugar-free formats.

Owned and operated by Pittsburgh native Maddison Manolis, StretchLab joins the growing roster of retail and experiential options at The Terminal. “StretchLab is a great addition to our retail lineup,” says McCaffery Pittsburgh vice president Dean Welch. “Through various onsite events, we have seen the growth of interest in fitness experiences in the area, and we are excited to welcome this wellness concept to the city and The Terminal.”

“StretchLab represents the most remarkably simple thing you can do to move better,” says owner Maddison Manolis. “The need for assisted stretching is critical to the longevity of a healthy lifestyle.
