    Are you a Pittsburgher?   

    No, I was born in Mexico City. I came to Pittsburgh over 30 years ago. I had been living in New Jersey, working in a restaurant with a fellow by the name of Antonio Pereira. Antonio decided to move to Pittsburgh to open a restaurant. After several months he called me and said he wanted me to come to Pittsburgh to his new restaurant. I asked him, “Where is Pittsburgh?” I came here and worked in his restaurant for 12 years. That was the very successful Spanish restaurant
    Mallorca on the South Side.

    What did you do after leaving Mallorca?   

    I started my own business, Taco Loco, which many people still remember. It was the first Taco business in Pittsburgh. We were located on the South Side for over 20 years and had many loyal customers, like we do today.

    To what do you owe the popularity of your product after all these years?   

    Quality. I have never changed the quality of my products. Whatever the price of the best tomatoes, or avocados, or any ingredient, I pay it. Customers know when you are changing the ingredients. I don’t change them, regardless of price.

    Do you do catering?

    Yes, we have a food truck and we have catered events as large as 150 people—weddings, graduations, birthdays, and even divorce “parties.”

    What is the best thing about Pittsburgh?

    The people. They are friendly and nice to deal with. Also, this city has everything that a big city has and is reasonably priced. Prices in Pittsburgh are low compared to other places. And we have what larger cities have. The sports, the opera, symphony, and it’s all affordable.
